The XR-1 is a 1977 SLR from Ricoh, introduced alongside the autoexposure XR-2 as the company's first SLRs to use K-mount lenses. The XR-1 requires two 1.5v silver-oxide batteries only to power its match-needle light meter. The vertically-traveling, metal focal-plane shutter is entirely mechanical. This offers speeds from 1 to 1/1000 sec. and a 1/125 flash sync speed. Unusually, there is a multiple-exposure function provided, using the "M.E" button on the rear of the camera, below the wind lever. There is a window above the lens aperture ring which allows the selected f/stop to be viewed through the viewfinder.

The Ricoh XR1 is a full manual camera with light meter assistance. This means that the photographer can control every parameter of the settings. Choose exposure time with shutter speed as well as the lens aperture, and then simply check the light meter, which informs the photographer whether or not the selected settings will result in a proper exposure. Another interesting feature is the multiple exposure switch! This is a fantastic and affordable general purpose camera for the enthusiastic or new film shooter. The camera is in very nice condition, with no damage or marring. The viewfinder, film compartment, mirror box, shutter, and battery compartment are all very clean and in great condition. All dials, switches and knobs click and actuate exactly as they should. The light meter works perfectly. Additionally of note is the fact that this camera uses the popular K-mount lens system, meaning that many lenses from various makers can be natively mounted to the machine. These include offerings from Pentax, who made some of the best lenses of the day.
